Identifying english pocket watches4/4/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() It doesn't look bad for a 19c watch to me. Personally, I would leave the dial alone. I agree with you that it is a nice watch and well worth spending a little money on, especially to have it serviced properly. Such watches aren't necessarily of lesser quality than others, but the names of their makers are unknown to us. ![]() But there were many other small, one-man outfits, who bought and assembled watch parts and sold them on. Many signed their movements and their names are known and recorded. In the 19th century practically every town in England had a watchmaker of some description. Very likely we won't know who the watch maker was if there is no name inscribed on the movement. Castleberg registered the A.C mark at the Chester office in Nov 1879, so I would suspect your watch movement was made after that date.Ī photo of the movement and of the hallmarks would help a lot in supplying more info. A.C are the initials of the case maker who was probably Antoine Castleberg. Depending on the style of the letter "M", it could also be 1850-51, 1875-76, 1895-96 and later dates. So I would expect to see the leopard's head if it's 1830. Up until July 1839 the Chester town mark included both the leopard's head (similar to London) and the three wheat sheaves and sword. I would need to see more of the hallmark to confirm your 1830 date. ![]()
